Bello accuses Sara Duterte of ‘masterminding’ arrest
FORMER Akbayan Party-list representative Walden Bello, a vice presidential candidate in the May 2022 elections, on Wednesday pointed to Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio as behind his arrest.
At the same time, Bello decried political harassment in connection with the cyber libel charges filed against him before a Davao City court.
After posting bail of P96, 000 on Tuesday, a day after his arrest by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) at his residence in Barangay Holy Spirit, Bello, 76, said he has “no doubt” and it is “very clear that Sara Duterte is the mastermind behind my arrest by weaponizing the Cyber-crime Law to silence those critical to them”.
He told Duterte, however, that “you cannot stop us from revealing in public corruption and irregularities in the government.”
Accompanied by his then running mate and presidential candidate, Bukluran ng Mamamayan chairman Leodegario “Leody” de Guzman, and his lead legal counsel Luke Espiritu, Bello said the case against him was a clear proxy harassment with no less than the Vice President as the real “protagonist.”
“Just as Ms. Duterte and her running mate and now President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had repeatedly cowardly refused to participate in debates with other candidates in the recent elections, so she is running to form by putting up a dummy to file the charges against me,” Bello said.
