Duterte signs law on school opening
A law that allows the President to set a date for the start of the school year during a state of emergency or calamity has been signed into law.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act 11480 on July 17, 2020.
RA 11480 amends Section 3 of RA 7797 by adding the provision that “in the event of a declaration of a state of emergency or state of calamity, the President, upon the recommendation of the Secretary of Education, may set a different date for the start of the school year in the country or parts thereof.”
“Notwithstanding the provision of any law to the contrary, the deferred school opening shall apply to all basic education schools, including foreign or international schools,” it read.
RA 7797 set the start of the school year on the first Monday of June and not later than the last day of August.
