Marcos okays importation of 150K metric tons of sugar
PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has approved the importation of 150,000 metric tons (MT) of sugar, Malacañang confirmed on Thursday.
Press Secretary Rose Beatrix “Trixie” Cruz-Angeles said the Chief Executive gave the go ahead during his meeting with
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri and sugar industry stakeholders, including manufacturers who use premium sugar for their products such as carbonated drinks, last Aug. 17, 2022.
“Yun po ang proposed quantity for importation gawa nga ng pangangailangan ng mga industries na tinatawag ng ating Pangulo (That was the proposed quantity for importation brought about by the need of industries according to the President),” she said in during a virtual presser.
“Sila po ang gumagamit in commercial quantities, in large commercial quantities ng asukal and some jobs are dependent on their continued production. So, yes po, kino-confirm natin na yun ang proposed amount, 150,000 metric tons (They’re the ones using commercial quantities, in large commercial quantities of sugar and some jobs are dependent on their continued production). So, yea, we confirm that the proposed amount is 150,000 metric tons),” she added.
No timeframe for the importation, however, has been finalized yet, Cruz-Angeles said.
