Policeman linked to Kian de los Santos killing arrested for robbery-extortion in Quezon City
A policeman linked to the murder of a teen in the Duterte administration’s drug war was arrested for robbery and extortion in Quezon City.
17-year-old Kian de los Santos in 2017, has been arrested by counter-intelligence authorities for being involved in a robbery-extortion scheme in Quezon City.
Police Corporal Myrldon Yagi was arrested during an entrapment operation on Tuesday morning in Barangay Holy Spirit after a fruit stand owner in Barangay Pasong Tamo accused him of threatening to dismantle his stall if he refused to give him money, according to the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The victim also told authorities that Yagi allegedly mauled him, poked a gun at him, threatened him and took his mobile phone away.
The complainant prompted the IMEG to launch an entrapment operation against Yagi, leading to his arrest and confiscation of four pieces of P500 bills or the marked money, a unit of Taurus 9mm pistol, two pieces of magazine with 16 ammunition, a PNP identification card and P1,635 in cash.
Yagi is now detained at the PNP-IMEG’s detention cell in Camp Crame, the national headquarters of the PNP. He is also facing criminal and administrative charges.
Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the PNP chief, said he ordered a “thorough investigation” into the involvement of Yagi to the robbery-extortion scheme and to determine whether he had acoomplices.
But Eleazar and the PNP-IMEG did not mention that Yagi was one of the respondents in the case involving the death of Kian de los Santos in 2017 in Caloocan City, which earned criticisms locally and internationally on President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal war against illegal drugs.
However, the case of Yagi, along with 12 other policemen, was dismissed by the Department of Justice in January 2018 due to lack of probable cause.
