Group launched to urge Sara Duterte to run for presidency, asks Pres. Duterte to reconsider VP bid
MANILA, Philippines — A citizens’ movement to convince Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for the presidency in the 2022 elections was launched on Monday.
Supporters, chapter members, and officers of Hugpong Para kay Sara (HPS) took their oath and pledged to support Duterte-Carpio and help her decide to throw her hat in the presidential derby in the upcoming elections.
The group is also appealing to President Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider his vice presidential bid so that Duterte-Carpio can run for the presidency.
“Kami bilang mga tao o citizens na sumusuporta kay Mayor Sara, while we respect her decision not to run, we believe she is the best person for the job kaya hindi kami tumitigil to convince Mayor Sara to reconsider her statement a few days ago,” Duterte-Carpio’s regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), Secretary General, Anthony Del Rosario said in a press conference in the launching of the movement.
(We, as citizens supporting Mayor Sara, while we respect her decision not to run, we believe she is the best person for the job so that we are not stopping our attempts to convince Mayor Sara to reconsider her statement a few days ago.)
“Kasama rin diyan, sana makumbinse rin natin ang ating Pangulo Duterte na i-reconsider niya ang kanyang planong tumabkbo sa ating bansa. Gusto natin na si Mayor Sara duterte ang tumakbo nilang Presidente,” he added.
(Alongside that, we hope to also convince President Duterte to reconsider his vice presidential bid. We want Mayor Sara to run.)
Duterte-Carpio earlier said she would no longer run for the presidency in 2022 after her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, accepted his nomination as the vice presidential candidate of PDP-Laban.
She said she and her father agreed that only one of them would run for a national position in 2022.
Del Rosario said they hope to ask the Dutertes to reconsider their decisions by showing the support and clamor of the people for Duterte-Carpio to run for the presidency.
