Lacson leaves Partido Reporma as party set to back another presidential bet

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 24) — Presidential candidate Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Thursday resigned as chairperson and member of the Partido Reporma party to run as an independent bet.

He said his decision came after he was informed by Partido Reporma President Pantaleon Alvarez that their slate in Davao del Norte has decided to endorse a different presidential candidate.

“To Partido Reporma President former Speaker Alvarez, Secretary General Davao del Norte Gov. Edwin Jubahib, and the rest of the Davao del Norte Reporma candidates — let me tell you this: I harbor no ill-feelings towards you and anyone who may hereafter opt to join them in their new choice of a presidential candidate,” he added.

Lacson did not name the candidate, but his opponent Vice President Leni Robredo is holding her grand rally in Davao del Norte on the same day. Robredo is also set to meet with Jubahib.

He joined Partido Reporma in July 2021, days after he confirmed his presidential bid.

Lacson said running as an independent candidate will work in his favor, dashing rumors that he plans to withdraw from the race.

“Independent-minded ako [I am independent-minded]. I feel more relieved than disappointed,” he said in a media briefing.

Commission on Elections Commissioner George Garcia said Lacson’s change of affiliation will not affect his presidential bid.
