Price of sugar hits P100 a kilo

The retail price of refined sugar in various local markets has reached P100 a kilo, based on the latest monitoring of the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Thursday, August 4, 2022.

Refined sugar is being sold by as high as P100 per kilo at Muñoz Market in Quezon City, Pasay City Market, and Malabon Central Market in Malabon City.

In an interview with The Manila Times, Agriculture Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said the high price was due to tight supply of sugar in the local market.

Evangelista confirmed the statement of Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Administrator Herminigido Serafica that the sugar supply in the country will only last until August 19, 2022.

“I will meet with Administrator Serafica to discuss the results of his meeting with stakeholders,” Evangelista said.

The price of refined sugar was P57 to P60 a kilo in February 2022.
